The 1980s and 90s were flooded with homeowners rushing to replace their dated single glazed units with double glazing instead, and the natural evolution to that has been to add a third panel to the frame.

The reasoning is the same as it was for double glazing taking off a couple of decades ago. Homeowners are drawn to the increased thermal performance, security and sound insulation that triple glazing brings.

It does typically cost anywhere from 10-50% more than double glazing, with the final price more dependent on the frame material and style you choose. Is it worth it? It depends on whether you’re happy to pay a slightly higher fee upfront in exchange for lower energy bills long-term.

Triple glazing is available in a wide range of styles, including popular casements, flush sash and tilt and turn. To decipher whether or not it’s the right thing for you, we’ve put this blog together!

Introducing triple glazing: How much does it cost, and is it worth it?

As mentioned, triple glazing typically raises the cost compared to double glazing by around 10% to 50%. That’s quite a wide range, but the total cost depends much more on the material and style you choose than the number of panes of glass alone.

Aluminium windows, for example, usually cost more than uPVC, regardless of whether you go for double or triple glazing. Likewise, a heritage-style sliding sash will sit at a different price point to a standard casement.

It’s also worth knowing that not all triple glazing is created equal. In some cases, triple glazing can actually be less energy efficient than high-quality double glazing, because corners are sometimes cut by making the panes of glass thinner to keep the overall unit weight down. Here at DM Windows, we make sure that never happens. We source all our glazing units from trusted manufacturers, so you get genuine performance, not just an extra layer of glass for the sake of it.

What are the benefits of triple glazing?

When done properly, triple glazing offers some serious advantages over standard double glazing. Here’s what you can expect.

Improved energy efficiency

Energy efficiency simply means how well your windows keep heat inside your home in winter, and out in the summer. When done right, triple glazing uses three panes of glass with argon gas filling the gaps between them, which typically slows down heat loss more effectively than two panes can manage.

In practical terms, triple glazing can be up to around 40% more energy efficient than standard double glazing, which means lower heating bills and a reduced carbon footprint over time.

Sound insulation

If you live near a busy road, school or train line, you’ll appreciate the extra noise reduction that triple glazing provides. That additional layer of glass acts as another barrier against outside sound, making your home noticeably quieter and more peaceful.

A more comfortable home

Reduced heat transfer means your home maintains a more consistent, natural temperature throughout the year. No more cold spots near the windows in winter or overheating in summer, just steady comfort that makes everyday living that little bit nicer.

Increased home value

Energy efficient upgrades are highly attractive to buyers across the UK. Indeed, with prospective buyers conducting surveys including your home’s overall energy rating, quality glazing can make a real difference. Therefore, investing in triple glazing can boost the appeal and resale value of your property, particularly as more homeowners prioritise lower energy bills and better insulation.
